Following her stint at the 20th Asian Games, Alex Eala will resume her WTA run at the Wuhan Open campaign against China’s Han Shi in the Round of 64.
The pride of the Philippines is the tournament’s 13th seed, while her opponent secured a spot in the main draw through the WTA 1000 qualifiers.
A Young and Inexperienced Han Shi Faces a Test
Entering the tournament ranked No. 231 in the world, the 21-year-old Chinese player has yet to make a significant impact this year but has collected a handful of victories along the way.
At the China Open, she successfully qualified for the main draw and pushed eventual champion Qinwen Zheng into a grueling three-set match, losing 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, before being eliminated.
She has yet to reach the quarterfinals or semifinals of a main-tour WTA event. Her deepest runs in professional tournaments include reaching the Round of 32 at the WTA 125 Suzhou Open and qualifying for the main draw of the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing.
While she has not won a WTA singles title, she captured two ITF titles in 2026 at the W50 Elvas and W15 Monastir tournaments. She also reached the final of the W35 tournament in Luzhou.
Before facing the highest-ranked Southeast Asian player in the first round, Han Shi defeated American Peyton Stearns and Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova in the qualifying rounds.
Can Alex Eala Shrug Off the Rust?
Having earned some time to rest following her bronze-medal finish at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, the Rafa Nadal Academy graduate will look to carry her momentum into the Wuhan Open.
Her upcoming match could provide an opportunity to build confidence on the WTA 1000 stage, but it could also present a challenging test as the 2026 WTA season approaches its conclusion.
Alex Eala is also set to compete in the women’s doubles, partnering with Türkiye’s Zeynep Sonmez. The pair will face Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska in the Round of 32 of the 2026 Wuhan Open.
