Alex Eala and Venus Williams may have only just joined forces, but the brand-new American-Filipina tandem already looked impressive after defeating Alexandra Osborne of Australia and Catherine Harrison of the United States, 6-3, 6-4, in the Round of 16 of the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open.

Eala and Williams Came Out Firing

With a packed crowd eager to witness the highly anticipated partnership, Eala and Williams wasted no time asserting themselves. Blending Eala’s quick movement and sharp court coverage with Williams’ veteran poise and powerful serving, the duo stormed to an early 4-0 advantage in the opening set.

Osborne and Harrison managed to settle down midway through the frame, but Eala and Williams remained firmly in control, dictating most of the rallies and capitalizing on key service games to comfortably close out the set.

Right Mix of Talent and Experience

The second set proved far more competitive as Harrison and Osborne began finding their rhythm. After leveling at 1-1, the American-Australian pair grabbed their first lead of the match at 3-2, testing the chemistry of the newly formed tandem.

But whenever momentum threatened to swing, Eala and Williams responded with composure. The Filipino-American pairing regained control by winning crucial points late in the set, with Eala’s consistency from the baseline and Williams’ experience under pressure proving decisive.

Osborne and Harrison managed to level the score one last time at 4-4, but Eala and Williams elevated their game in the closing stretch. They broke serve in the ninth game to move ahead 5-4 before Williams confidently served out the match, sealing the straight-sets victory in just one hour and 10 minutes.

It was an encouraging first outing for the pair, who showed flashes of strong chemistry despite teaming up for the first time. The win also gave Eala a timely boost after her early singles exit earlier in the week, while Williams continued her return to doubles competition ahead of Wimbledon.

First-Time Duo Advances to the Quarterfinals

Awaiting Alex Eala and Venus Williams in the quarterfinals is a much sterner challenge against the tournament’s second-seeded duo of Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls—both established doubles specialists currently ranked world No. 11.
