Alex Eala had already shown she could compete with the world’s best. At the 2026 Mubadala DC Open, she proved she could be among them.
The 21-year-old became the first Filipino to claim a WTA Tour-level singles championship after a stellar showing in the latest WTA 500 tournament. It also serves as her first WTA 500 crown.
Her road to the title was nowhere near easy, though.
Eala entered the event with immense confidence and a passionate fanbase rallying behind her, both in the stands and back home in the Philippines.
Alex Eala Overcomes a Star-Studded Field
After grinding out back-to-back victories over Qinwen Zheng and Leylah Fernandez to open her run, Eala took out second-seeded Elina Svitolina in two sets.
In the semis, she overcame four-time Grand Slam champ Naomi Osaka in a stunning 6-4, 6-2, two-set showing, which showed how much the Filipina has been rounding out into her own.
Then, she went toe-to-toe with world No. 3 Jessica Pegula in the finals.
A Historic Comeback Against Jessica Pegula
The championship match presented Eala a unique challenge. After dropping the opening set 4-6, rain halted play midway through the second set. Postponed to the following day (Monday, August 3) and holding a 2-1 lead entering the continuation, she secured the second set at 6-4 and shut out Pegula 6-0 in the final set.
Along with winning her maiden WTA Tour title, Eala now sits at a career-best world ranking of No. 20, further extending her status as the highest-ranked Filipina in WTA history.
She’s set to compete at the currently ongoing WTA 1000 Canadian Open, where she will face Alycia Parks in the Round of 64.
Eala’s also currently listed to compete at next week’s Cincinnati Open, just before aiming for a major crown at the US Open from August 30 to September 13.
