The Converge FiberXers continue to be one of the PBA’s most perplexing franchises. In the Commissioner’s Cup, Converge failed to even make the playoffs despite boasting what was, on paper, arguably one of the strongest rosters in the league. In the ongoing Governors’ Cup, the FiberXers opened with a 3‑0 run featuring a pair of blowout wins, only to stumble through a four‑game skid before heading into the break with back‑to‑back triumphs.
Now, the goal is to build on those two wins and author a franchise breakthrough that seems within reach.
Where Does Converge Stand at the Moment
Converge is in a decent enough position right now as it occupies third place in Group A with a 5‑4 record. The FiberXers are two games behind the NLEX Road Warriors and San Miguel Beermen, who are both at 7‑2, and one game ahead of the hard‑charging, suddenly all‑healthy TNT Tropang 5G.
Crucially, the FiberXers’ next two games are against the Titan Ultra Giant Risers and Macau Giant Pandas, whom Converge beat by 31 and 25, respectively. That means the Delta Pineda‑helmed squad could climb to 7‑4 before what could be a crucial outing against TNT in their last game. Long story short, it looks like the FiberXers are well‑positioned to make the playoffs this time around, either as a third or fourth seed.
What to Watch Out for When Converge Returns
So far in this Governors’ Cup, the FiberXers have proven beyond doubt that they could put up points, emerging as the second-most prolific offense in the league at 115.7 points per game on 48.3% shooting overall.
However, the defense remains a piece of work, and how well Converge plays on that side of the ball could ultimately determine if it will achieve that franchise breakthrough of making it to at least the semis. After nine games so far, the FiberXers are surrendering the third‑most points in the league at 110.8 on 41.3 made field goals (third‑worst mark) and a 44.8 percent shooting clip (seventh‑worst). They are also giving up the fourth‑most assists in the conference at 22.6.
Needless to say, Converge’s defense will be crucial to the team’s chances of making noise the rest of the Governors’ Cup.
Locals to Keep an Eye On
The obvious standouts are the three Gilas Pilipinas call‑ups: Justin Arana (21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists), Justine Baltazar (14.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.1 steals), and Juan Gomez de Liaño (12.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 6.7 assists). All three have been impressive prior to the break, and their national team experience should only sharpen their play further.
But for all the talent and firepower that the Arana‑JGDL‑Baltazar trio offers up, Converge has noticeably been better with a certain Calvin Abueva on the floor. The Beast has so far been putting up 10.7 points, a team‑high 9.0 caroms, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals off the bench, and his energy, intensity, and hustle are often the spark the FiberXers need to elevate their play. It’s why a bigger role and more minutes for Abueva are to be expected.
Outlook
If things break Converge’s way, it just might nail its first-ever semis appearance when all is said and done as Pineda and his crew won’t have to play the league’s heavyweights—San Miguel, Ginebra, and TNT—in the quarterfinals. Instead, a date with either the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters or Magnolia Hotshots is looking likely, and both are matchups that the FiberXers can theoretically handle.
And if that defense catches up with that high-powered offense? Then the Converge FiberXers might find themselves making it all the way to the finals.
