Weeks into the NBA offseason, the Golden State Warriors finally made another move in their quiet free agency, re-signing key forward Draymond Green to a one-year extension worth $27.7 million on Wednesday.
The deal matches the exact payroll on Green’s final year of his four-year, $100 million contract in 2023, which he initially opted out of in hopes of freeing up cap space to sign basketball icon LeBron James.
The Warriors were listed as one of the finalists in The King’s preferred destinations but ultimately fell short—with James signing a two-year, $8 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Green’s deal marks the fourth extension the Dubs have made this offseason, following renewals of key role players Kristaps Porziņģis, Al Horford, and De’Anthony Melton, who all signed two-year extensions with the team.
Warriors Deplete Remaining Cap Space on Green
With Green’s new deal, the Warriors have now consumed their remaining payroll on the 14-year veteran and are well over the salary cap—prompting a similar roster for their upcoming 2027 campaign.
This also means Golden State will now shift its focus to acquiring players through veteran minimum contracts or trades, as signing remaining big names in the market such as James Harden or DeMar DeRozan is now out of the question.
Green, however, still remains as an elite piece for the Warriors. Despite averaging only 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per contest in 2026, the 36-year-old continues to bring defensive intensity, facilitating, and veteran presence to the squad.
Green, along with franchise star Stephen Curry and head coach Steve Kerr, remains one of the three core pieces in Golden State’s dynasty, which delivered four championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022.
With star forward Jimmy Butler set to miss the majority of the 2026–27 season after suffering a season-ending ACL tear earlier this year, the Warriors will lean on Curry and Green as Golden State looks poised for a return to the playoffs.
