Filipino prizefighter Eumir Marcial delivered a statement win on Sunday, stopping American challenger Omar Huerta in the third round of their middleweight bout at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, California.
Marcial set the tone from the opening bell as the aggressor, launching a sustained body attack on Huerta that routinely sent him to the ropes. The American, himself known as a power puncher much like the Filipino, attempted to quell Marcial’s uprising but was repeatedly overwhelmed.
Eumir Marcial Closes in Spectacular Fashion
The end came in the third round when Eumir Marcial landed a well‑timed, picture‑perfect counter right hook that caught Huerta square on the temple. The fight was officially waved off at the 1:54 mark of Round 3 as the American couldn’t beat the count.
The win improved Marcial’s record to 8‑0 with 5 KOs and earned him high praise from veteran scribe Chris Mannix, who hailed the pride of Zamboanga as a rising contender at 160. Huerta, on the other hand, absorbed a second straight defeat and now holds a record of 15‑2‑1 with 13 KOs.
Asian Games Next for Eumir Marcial?
Marcial’s eighth professional victory came in abbreviated fashion and without taking any damage, as he dominated the entirety of the fight. This was exactly the best‑case scenario the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (Abap) had hoped for, with the two‑time Olympian pegged to compete in the 80kg category at the 20th Asian Games.
The plan, as outlined by Abap president Marcus Manalo, is for Marcial to fly straight to Aichi‑Nagoya after his fight with Huerta so he can compete in the quadrennial continental showcase. That plan, of course, was contingent on Marcial winning handily against Huerta and taking no damage—and that was something the Filipino delivered on Sunday.
However, it remains unclear if that plan will push through. But for a Philippine boxing team looking to break a years-long gold medal drought, the hope is that it will.
