With two games of UAAP men’s basketball experience so far, former boys’ MVP Cabs Cabonilas continues to adjust to the intensity and physicality of the college game with the FEU Tamaraws.
The Season 88 Finals MVP admitted to early jitters in his first college game against the Adamson Soaring Falcons that ultimately ended in a close loss, but credited the guidance of Sean Chambers to bounce back in a blowout win against the UE Red Warriors on Saturday, September 26, at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
“Nung unang laro ko dito sa college, medyo kabado pa ako, pero ‘yung pinapagawa ni coach, ginagawa ko lang ‘yung role ko… Next laro namin, gawin lang namin ‘yung lahat, parati lang kami mag‑usap‑usap sa court,” Cabonilas, who tallied 6 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 assists, said postgame.
The 20‑year‑old rookie is regarded as one of the brightest pieces in the Tamaraws’ wing department, following the departure of former Rookie of the Year Veejay Pre.
Cabonilas Acknowledges 3×3 Experience With Gilas
Earlier this month, Cabonilas and teammate Jedric Daa saw international action representing Gilas Pilipinas during their FIBA U23 3×3 World Cup stint, facing big‑name opponents such as Spain and New Zealand, but were ultimately bounced out after a winless record in the group stage.
Cabonilas credited the opportunity to play against FIBA competition and looks to apply the same defensive intensity for the Morayta‑based squad as they aim to end a four‑year Final Four drought.
“Dun sa 3×3 namin, marami akong nakuhang experience kasi matataas tapos malalaki [‘yung kalaban]. Dinadala ko lang ‘yun dito. Sa depensa, kuha ng rebound,” Cabonilas said.
Cabonilas and the Tamaraws will look to extend their winning streak against the defending champions La Salle Green Archers on Wednesday, September 30, at the same venue.
