NBA European League Edges Closer to Reality as Adam Silver Plans Ownership Meetings Around FIFA World Cup Final

The NBA’s European expansion is moving from concept to reality—and the 2026 FIFA World Cup final is providing a convenient backdrop for the next step.

Commissioner Adam Silver revealed after the league’s Board of Governors meeting onWednesday that he and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum plan to meet with multiple groups interested in owning teams in the planned new European league, with many of those prospective owners set to be in the New York area for Sunday’s World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. The geographical convenience was not lost on Silver or the league.

“We’ve had tremendous interest from multiple cities in Europe, including cities that we didn’t ask for bids from,” Silver said. “And we discussed with our board today that we’re in the process of finalizing those bids for an initial group of cities.”

The NBA and FIBA—basketball’s global governing body—announced plans last year to pursue a new European league, putting an end to years of speculation about whether and when such a move would actually materialise. The target launch window remains fall 2027, which gives the league just over a year to finalise ownership groups, cities, and operational structure before tip-off.

NBA’s Europe Expansion Going as Planned

Silver’s tone was measured but optimistic when asked about where the process stood.

“Things are where I hope they would be,” he said.

That is not a ringing endorsement of smooth sailing, but it is not a warning signal either. It is the language of a league that has done the groundwork, sees genuine interest from the markets it needs, and is now in the operational phase of turning a high-profile announcement into a functioning competition.

The unsolicited bids from European cities are the most telling detail in Silver’s comments. When markets come to you rather than waiting to be approached, it signals that the commercial proposition is compelling enough to generate genuine competition for inclusion. That kind of demand gives the NBA leverage in shaping the league’s initial footprint and selecting ownership groups that meet the financial and operational standards the competition will require.

Long-Planned NBA League in Europe Is Finally Getting Traction

A European NBA league has been discussed, floated, and shelved repeatedly over the past two decades. The difference now is institutional commitment from both the NBA and FIBA, a concrete timeline, and a Board of Governors conversation that frames the process as finalisation rather than exploration.

Sunday’s World Cup final brings the world’s attention to the New York area. Silver and Tatum will use that moment to advance one of the NBA’s most ambitious international projects. Whether those meetings produce the ownership group announcements the league needs to make the fall 2027 target real will be one of the stories to watch in the months ahead.

The European league is coming. The question is whether the next twelve months deliver on the timeline Silver is counting on.
