The NU Bulldogs gave head coach Jeff Napa a birthday gift, routing the UE Red Warriors, 76‑56, in the UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Bulldogs took control early, building a 22‑point lead, 42‑20, at halftime, en route to their first win of the season following their opening-day-loss to the La Salle Green Archers.
However, Lance Sabroso, Tope Lagat, and Mo Tañedo helped the Red Warriors find their rhythm in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 12, 63‑51, after outscoring NU, 20‑12, in the frame.
NU Finishes Strong for the Win
The Bulldogs quickly regrouped in the final quarter, shutting down UE’s comeback attempt and restoring their 20‑point advantage to secure the win, 76‑56.
Despite the victory coming on his 45th birthday, Napa was far from satisfied with the way his team performed, particularly in the third quarter.
“Hindi ito dapat ‘yung resulta na gusto namin mangyari. This game, especially nung third quarter, medyo nag‑relax eh. ‘Yun ang kailangan naming ma‑address next game against UP para ready kami talaga,” said Napa.
Mo Diassana finished the game with a double‑double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Reinhard Jumamoy also scored 12 points. Kenshin Padrones added 11 points and 7 rebounds.
For the Red Warriors, Lagat and Nigerian big man Ola Ajani both scored 11 points.
The Bulldogs will next face the UP Fighting Maroons on Saturday, September 26, at 6:00 p.m. at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. Earlier that day, the Red Warriors will take on the FEU Tamaraws at 2:30 p.m.
