The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) wants the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) to start off with a clean slate—with clean slate in this case meaning a board without its current members.
And it appears the POC has gotten its wish. On Monday, the committee announced that all PNVF board members “agreed to resign” during a general assembly of pertinent stakeholders in local volleyball held at the Solaire Theater Board Room in Parañaque City.
Paving the Way for a New PNVF Board
With this en masse resignation, the POC expects a new 13-strong PNVF board will be formed once the resignations are made official. This setup, according to the POC, was agreed upon by the stakeholders present at the assembly and will pave the way for the inclusion of athlete representatives—in this case, beach volleyball for women and volleyball for men—and representatives from the UAAP and NCAA.
“This is to introduce inclusivity and, more importantly, that the stakeholders prioritize the call of the national team,” said POC chairman Bambol Tolentino.
Moreover, the new board won’t have a chairman. Instead, the POC will have a seat on the board, while the president will be appointing the PNVF’s secretary-general.
Why Local Volleyball Got to This Point
At the moment, the PNVF is operating under the auspices of the POC after the latter was suspended by the FIVB due to “serious governance concerns and multiple purported violations of the FIVB Code of Ethics.”
Days later, the FIVB laid out preconditions for the suspension to be lifted, and among them are the creation of an Athletes’ Commission, the alignment of the local volleyball calendar to the FIVB’s, and the adoption of a conflict-of-interest policy in line with good governance principles.
In June, the FIVB had laid out a roadmap for the reinstatement of the PNVF, which included the creation of an Athletes’ Commission, adoption of a conflict-of-interest policy, creation of a regional league designed to expand competitive opportunities outside Metro Manila, and alignment of the local volleyball calendar to the FIVB’s.
The POC will be holding another general assembly on August 10, with the agenda to center on the election of the new board.
