The San Miguel Beermen waylaid the Terrafirma Dyip, 135-105, on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium to get back on the winning track after their blowout loss to the TNT Tropang 5G to open their PBA Governors’ Cup restart. With the win, the Beermen improved to 8-3 and stayed on track for a top-two finish in Group A. The loss, on the other hand, dropped Terrafirma to 4-7 in the conference.
What Happened?
San Miguel and Terrafirma went shot for shot and point for point in the opening frame, with George King’s 10 points leading San Miguel’s 28, and Justin Strings’ 7 fueling the Dyip’s 27. The Beermen then blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Terrafirma, 36-20, behind June Mar Fajardo firing 13 big points.
The Beermen continued piling up the points in the third with a 41-33 third quarter as King caught fire once again, pouring in 21 points. Fajardo, meanwhile, added 8 more as San Miguel entered the final canto with a 105-80 bubble. San Miguel then opened the fourth on a 13-0 run highlighted by three straight triples to put the game to bed.
Who Stood Out?
King had a fiery bounce-back to his lackluster showing against TNT as he exploded for 44 big points on a quartet of four-pointers and an 11-for-18 clip. He also had 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks. Fajardo, meanwhile, had his best scoring game of the conference, finishing with 25 points on 9-for-11 shooting on top of 12 boards. CJay Perez added 22 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Terrafirma, on the other hand, leaned on Strings and his 28 points and 9 boards. Maverick Ahanmisi helped him out with 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting to go along with 6 rebounds, and 9 assists.
3 Keys to the Game
- Firepower. San Miguel just had too much ammo for Terrafirma. After that tight opening quarter, the Beermen’s scoring just took over, as they scored 30, 41, and 30 in the next three periods. Leading the way was King’s 44, with Fajardo’s 25 doing damage as well. That’s 69 points between them alone already.
- Long-distance shooting. The Beermen were on target from distance, going 11-for-24 from three territory and 5-for-9 from four-point land for 53 big points. Terrafirma, in contrast, made only 7 of their 27 three-point attempts and was just 1-for-2 from four for 25 points.
- King and GOAT. King and Fajardo just took turns pummeling the Dyip’s defense, with King starting hot and then going off in the third. The nine-time MVP, meanwhile, took over in the second to blow the game open for San Miguel.
