Tyrese Maxey powered the Philadelphia 76ers to a big road win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday, a day after losing to the New Orleans Pelicans.
Maxey fired 39 points on 16-for-28 shooting to go along with 3 rebounds and 8 assists as he outplayed fellow Team Stars All-Star Anthony Edwards. The former Kentucky Wildcat also had the highlight of the game, bearing down the lane in transition and flushing it down on the Ant-Man, who is usually on the other side of posters, using his left hand, no less.
Rookie VJ Edgecombe gave Tyrese Maxey plenty of help, adding 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals, while Quentin Grimes and Kelly Oubre Jr. added 19 and 18, respectively. Edwards led the Wolves with 28 markers but had 7 turnovers. Jaden McDaniels put up 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Tyrese Maxey Leading the Charge Again
With Joel Embiid again sidelined and Paul George serving out his suspension, the onus to lead the Sixers is once again squarely on the shoulders of Tyrese Maxey. The fifth-year guard, though, looks cut out for the challenge, as he has been averaging a career-best 28.9 points on 46.5% shooting overall, on top of 4.1 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 2.0 steals.
Embiid’s status remains uncertain, and George will be returning only later in the season, which means Maxey will have to be at his best to keep the Sixers in the running for an automatic playoff berth. As of this writing, they’re sixth in the East and just barely ahead of the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat.
Tyrese Maxey and the Sixers will look to win back-to-back games when they face off with the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday. The Wolves will try to bounce back the same day when they take on the Portland Trail Blazers.
