How Does the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 Work?

There are 16 teams in this stage. The winner of each match advances to the quarterfinals, while the losing team is eliminated from the tournament.

If a match is tied after 90 minutes, extra time will be played. If the score remains tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout.

Canada vs Morocco

Morocco opened the Round of 16 with a statement win, beating Canada 3-0 to move into the quarterfinals. Azzedine Ounahi led the way with two goals as Morocco ended Canada’s historic World Cup run.

Paraguay vs France

Brazil vs Norway

Mexico vs England

Portugal vs Spain

Spain edged Portugal 1-0 in one of the headline matches of the Round of 16, finding the decisive goal deep into stoppage time. Mikel Merino delivered the breakthrough in the 91st minute, sending Spain into the quarterfinals and ending Portugal’s World Cup run.

United States vs Belgium
