How Do the 2026 World Cup Quarterfinals Work?
Eight teams compete at this stage. The winner of each quarterfinal match advances to the semifinals, while the losing team is eliminated from the tournament.
If a match is tied after 90 minutes, extra time will be played. If the score remains tied after extra time, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout.

Match-by-Match Updates
Morocco vs France
France became the first team to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals after beating Morocco 2-0 in the opening quarterfinal match.
Kylian Mbappé once again delivered in the knockout stage, scoring for France and helping create the second goal. Ousmane Dembélé added the finish that sealed the result, ending Morocco’s run in the quarterfinals.
Morocco had already eliminated Canada in the Round of 16 and reached the last eight with another strong tournament showing, but France’s quality in the final third proved decisive.
Spain vs Belgium
Spain booked a semifinal meeting with France after edging Belgium 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
Fabián Ruiz gave Spain the lead before Charles De Ketelaere brought Belgium level before halftime. Mikel Merino then delivered the decisive late goal, sending Spain into its first World Cup semifinal since its 2010 title run.
Belgium pushed Spain deep into the match, but Spain’s control, patience and late finishing made the difference.
Norway vs England
England survived an extra-time test against Norway, winning 2-1 to reach the World Cup semifinals.
Norway struck first through Andreas Schjelderup, but Jude Bellingham brought England level before halftime. Bellingham then scored again in extra time, turning in the decisive goal to send England through.
Norway’s run ended after a strong knockout-stage campaign that included a Round of 16 win over Brazil, while England moved one step closer to the final.
Argentina vs Switzerland
Argentina completed the semifinal bracket with a 3-1 extra-time win over Switzerland.
Alexis Mac Allister gave Argentina an early lead, but Switzerland responded through Dan Ndoye in the second half. After Switzerland went down to 10 men, Argentina eventually found the breakthrough in extra time through Julian Alvarez before Lautaro Martinez added the final goal.
The result keeps Argentina’s title defense alive and sets up a major semifinal clash with England.
