The finals of the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open closed the curtain on a successful tournament, and Colombia’s Camila Osorio saved the best for last by beating Croatia’s Donna Vekić, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, to win the title.
Despite not having Alex Eala or any Filipina in the finals, the seats were filled with passionate Filipino tennis fans, and Vekić and Osorio treated them to a world-class display of championship tennis.
Donna Vekić Asserts Control Early, Camila Osorio Settles Quickly
Vekić took control early in the Philippine Women’s Open singles final, dictating play with her serve and crisp returns to seize the opening set. The tournament’s second seed broke serve early, capitalized on Osorio’s errors, and looked poised to impose her will.
Osorio, the fifth seed of the tournament, eventually settled in after the shaky start. Drawing confidence from longer rallies, the affable Colombian raised her level in the second set, racing to a 3-0 cushion with improved depth and timing. The Croatian responded in kind to trim the deficit, but Osorio stayed composed and closed out the set to force a decider and swing the momentum.
An Epic Conclusion to a Historic Tournament
The third set unfolded as a tense duel, with neither player giving an inch. Games were tightly contested as the crowd stayed locked in, cheering both fan favorites.
Vekić briefly edged ahead, only for Osorio to claw back, breaking serve to level matters at 5-all after trading momentum shifts.
With nerves tested and the match stretching past the two-and-a-half-hour mark, Osorio delivered in the clutch, holding firm under pressure, fending off break-point threats, and breaking once more to move within a game of the title.
Serving for the championship, the world No. 84 showed no hesitation, sealing the victory with a wide ace to successfully complete the comeback.
The win made Camila Osorio the inaugural WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open champion and earned her 125 ranking points, $15,500 in prize money, and a Filipiniana bolero. Donna Vekić, a four-time WTA winner, finished runner-up. Notably, both became fan favorites and were showered with overflowing love throughout the tournament.
