The struggles of Alex Eala on clay courts continued on Tuesday as she lost to Fil-Canadian Leylah Fernandez, 6-1, 6-4, at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. The one-sided loss bounced the Filipina out of the tournament after just one match—her second straight early exit in her clay-court swing following her Round of 16 defeat at the Linz Open.
Fernandez Dominates Early
Fernandez wasted no time asserting control, breaking Eala early and dictating rallies with her powerful left-handed forehand. Her ability to redirect shots and apply constant pressure forced the Filipina into defensive positions.
The 23-year-old quickly surged to a commanding 4-0 lead, capitalising on multiple service breaks while maintaining depth and precision in her groundstrokes. Eala briefly halted the run by getting on the board late in the set, but Fernandez remained firmly in control.
After 36 minutes, Fernandez closed out the opening set—highlighting her dominance in both shot-making and court positioning.
Eala Shows Fight
The pride of the Philippines responded with improved energy in the second frame, even grabbing her first lead of the match at 1-0. Eala showed flashes of her aggressive style, mixing in winners and stronger service games to stay within reach.
However, Fernandez quickly regained momentum, breaking in the third game and building a 3-1 advantage. Her consistency, and ability to win points off both wings, allowed her to extend the lead further to 5-2—putting her on the brink of victory.
Despite the deficit, the 20-year-old Filipina refused to fold. She mounted a late push, breaking Fernandez and holding serve to narrow the gap to 5-4, while also saving multiple match points to keep her hopes alive.
Fernandez Closes It Out
With the match on the line, the world No. 25 steadied herself in the final game. After briefly falling behind, she relied on composed shot-making and smart point construction to regain control. Fernandez consistently fired winners off her backhand and used drop shots to disrupt her opponent’s rhythm.
The five-time hard court champion eventually sealed the win on her third match point, completing a clinical performance built on aggressive returns, sharp angles, superior second-serve efficiency, and the use of her forehand—going 13-0 to end the match.
The victory propelled Fernandez into the next round, where she will face either Jasmine Paolini or Zeynep Sönmez. Eala, on the other hand, will be shifting her focus to the WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open scheduled from 21 April to 3 May.
