Alex Eala is through to the next round of the Mutua Madrid Open after beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-3, 6-3, on Wednesday.
The match began evenly, with both players holding serve through the first four games.
Pavlyuchenkova initially dictated rallies, but Eala’s steady baseline play kept her within striking distance at 2-2. Momentum shifted in the fifth game when Eala broke serve to take a 3-2 lead.
From there, the Filipina tightened her grip, extending rallies and forcing errors from the experienced Russian.
Despite a brief pause due to a medical timeout from Pavlyuchenkova, Eala remained focused. She held firm under pressure as she continued to save break points late in the set before breaking again in the ninth game to secure the opener.
Alex Eala Maintains Control in Second Set
Carrying her momentum forward, the 20-year-old Filipina struck early in the second set, building a 3-1 advantage with confident serving and sharp returns.
The 34-year-old Russian managed to break back and briefly threaten a comeback, but Eala responded immediately with another service break to reestablish control at 4-2. Her ability to win key points and dictate tempo proved decisive.
The world No. 44 continued to dominate baseline exchanges, mixing consistency with timely aggression to keep her opponent on the defensive.
With the finish line in sight, the Rafa Nadal Academy alumna stayed composed, holding serve comfortably and closing out the match.
Eala’s efficiency on the serve stood out as she won a high percentage of first-serve points while limiting opportunities for Pavlyuchenkova.
