Alex Eala begins her WTA 1000 Mutua Madrid Open campaign on Wednesday against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Round of 128.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova: A Veteran Searching for a Winning Moment
With this being their first career meeting, it is worth getting familiar with the player Alex Eala will be sharing the court with.
The 34-year-old Russian has 19 WTA titles to her name — a résumé that speaks for itself. But Pavlyuchenkova has not won a singles title in nearly eight years, with her last coming on clay at the WTA Internationaux de Strasbourg in 2018. Her most recent notable runs were runner-up finishes at the 2021 French Open and the 2023 Grand Est Ouvertes 88.
She arrives in Madrid on a five-match losing streak, ranked No. 116 in the world.
Eala, meanwhile, has had her own struggles on clay—winning just three of nine matches on the surface since last year. She also carries a 2–4 record across all her appearances at the Madrid Open. But with Pavlyuchenkova’s current form and ranking, this is as good an opportunity for Eala to get a much-needed win and build some momentum on a surface she has yet to fully conquer.
