Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes did not just win the Formula 1 2026 Miami Grand Prix on Monday morning—he made history, becoming the first driver ever to convert his first three pole positions into victories.

The fourth race of the 2026 F1 season roared to life under looming clouds at the Miami International Autodrome, with weather concerns forcing an earlier start. From pole, teenage sensation Antonelli faced immediate pressure as rivals charged into Turn 1.

A three-way fight erupted instantly, with Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc going wheel-to-wheel with the Mercedes teenager. Contact and lock-ups followed, sending Verstappen into a spin and briefly handing Leclerc the early lead. Behind them, the chaos continued as incidents involving Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly triggered an early Safety Car.

When racing resumed, the lead became a revolving door. Lando Norris surged forward while Antonelli and Leclerc traded positions in an intense back-and-forth. The race quickly evolved into a strategic and physical battle, with Norris, Antonelli, and even Verstappen each taking turns at the front.

A Showdown of Skill and Experience

As pit strategies unfolded and a light drizzle threatened to shake things up, the field compressed and reshuffled. The 19-year-old Antonelli regained control through decisive overtakes and calm race management, even as he reported minor gearbox concerns mid-race.

Norris emerged as his closest challenger, relentlessly closing the gap in the latter stages. Behind them, Oscar Piastri fought his way into podium contention, while Leclerc and George Russell battled fiercely just outside the top three.

Despite tire wear and mounting pressure, Antonelli kept his composure. Norris hovered within striking distance for several laps, but the Mercedes driver managed the pace expertly, gradually stabilizing his lead as the race approached its final phase.

A Historic Finish for Antonelli in Miami

The closing laps delivered another twist. Piastri overtook Leclerc for third before the Ferrari driver spun and dropped down the order, opening the door for Russell and Verstappen to capitalize. Post-race penalties further reshuffled the standings, demoting Leclerc to eighth.

Up front, there was no stopping Antonelli. He crossed the finish line 3.264 seconds ahead of Norris, sealing his third consecutive victory of the season. Piastri completed the podium, while Russell secured fourth ahead of Verstappen.

With the win, Antonelli became the first driver in Formula 1 history to convert his first three pole positions into victories. He now leads the championship with 80 points, 20 ahead of his Mercedes teammate George Russell.

Mercedes Tightens Grip on 2026

Antonelli’s triumph in Miami was more than just another win—it was a statement. Through four races, Mercedes has taken home every trophy. Russell won the season opener in Australia back in March, and Antonelli has won every race since.

Three poles, three wins, and a championship lead. Formula 1 may be witnessing the rise of its next dominant force—and with the Canadian Grand Prix on May 24 on the horizon, expectations are only going to get higher.
