Alex Eala’s breakthrough WTA-level title is memorable for so many reasons.
Aside from being her first championship at that elite tier, Eala also ran through a gauntlet of great players—beating an Olympic champion in Zheng Qinwen, a four-time Grand Slam winner in Naomi Osaka, and a former world No. 3 in Jessica Pegula. Oh, and she also knocked out world No. 10 Elina Svitolina and bested fellow rising star and defending Mubadala DC Open champion Leylah Fernandez along the way.
“I’ve said this a lot, but first and foremost, it’s an achievement for myself,” Eala pointed out in the postfinals presser. “It’s a personal achievement. I’ve worked really hard. Winning a 500 is insane. It’s an incredible milestone for me. And at the beginning of the week, there’s no way I would have thought that I would be holding this trophy. And even at the beginning of the year, it’s just these things kind of creep up on you… I hold these moments really close to me.”
It is, indeed, a remarkable achievement—and if Alex Eala is right about her post-tournament assessment of her game, she might be in line for a few more of these personal milestones.
A More Confident, Wiser Alex Eala
Crucially, the 21-year-old Filipina ace believes she is a far better, more confident player than the one who first came to Washington about a week ago to compete at the Mubadala DC Open. That figures given the quality of competition she faced—and ultimately overcame—on her way to the title.
“I think I ended the tournament in better shape than I started. I think each match I kept improving and kept learning things about myself,” Eala admitted. “It definitely gives me a lot of confidence. And it’s just really nice to see all the things that I’ve been working on off court or during training being implemented in matches.”
That growing confidence was palpable one round after the other, and it culminated in a personal achievement Alex Eala will forever hold dear to her heart.
Now, it’s time to bring that self-belief to Canada—and beyond.
