After surviving a tough matchup last Wednesday night against Magdalena Frech, Alex Eala now faces 31st seed Xinyu Wang in the Round of 64 at the WTA 1000 Italian Open.
World No. 33 Wang received a first-round bye, giving her additional preparation time before meeting crowd favorite Eala. This will be her second match against the Filipina this season and in the careers. In their first meeting, at the 2026 WTA 250 ASB Classic, the Chinese ace got the better of Eala, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, in a thriller.
Alex Eala versus Xinyu Wang wil take place on Friday, May 8. It was previously reported that the match was set to take place today but it has since been amended and moved for a later date.
Xinyu Wang: Olympic Silver Medalist on Clay
While Wang has found greater success in doubles competition, her singles performances—particularly on clay—have been respectable.
The 24-year-old Chinese player has captured four doubles titles, with the 2023 Roland Garros serving as her lone championship on clay. Her other titles came on grass at the 2024 Berlin Open and on hard courts at the 2021 Courmayeur Ladies Open and the 2019 Jiangxi International Open.
One of the biggest highlights of Wang’s career came at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she won a silver medal in mixed doubles on clay alongside Zhang Zhizhen.
This season, the Shenzhen native holds a 4-3 record in singles matches on clay. In her most recent campaign at the Catalonia Open in Spain, Wang reached the Round of 16 before bowing to Alina Charaeva, 5-7, 6-3, 6-7(1).
Wang’s upcoming battle against Eala will serve as a strong barometer for both players as they look to make their mark at the Italian Open.
