PBA Daily Metrics: Heading Catches Fire, Castro Steps Up, McCullough Dominates as TNT Evens Series with Big Game 4 Win Over Ginebra

Here are the players who made the biggest impact on June 10 and the stats to prove it.

TOP PERFORMERS OF THE DAY:

Christopher Albert McCullough TNT C 24 PTS  | 14 REB | 5 AST | 52.3 FPS

The veteran import was the top performer in Game 4. Though he started slowly on offense, going 0-for-5 in the first quarter, he came alive when it mattered most, scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter to help secure the win. He also dominated the boards, finishing as the only player with 10+ rebounds. Cmac clearly made his mark today, and the team will definitely need this kind of performance again in Game 5.

Jordan Timothy Heading TNT SG 29 PTS | 6 REB | 8 AST | 46.2 FPS

Heading was the hero in Game 4. Offensively, he ignited their attack with a 16-point second-quarter explosion and finished strong, shooting 5-of-7 from deep to lead all locals in scoring. He was just as impressive in playmaking, finishing with a game-high and a conference-high output.

Justin Brownlee GIN SF 32 PTS | 5 REB | 5 AST | 42.5 FPS

Offensively, Brownlee has been highly reliable throughout the conference, and he looked poised for another strong performance today after scoring 15 points in the first half. While he slowed down in the third quarter, scoring just three points, he turned it back up in the final period, hitting two four-pointers and scoring 14 to bring his team back into the game. Though the game didn’t go their way, it was still a strong performance from him, as he led all players in scoring with his 13th 30-point outing of the conference.

Calvin John Oftana TNT SG 12 PTS | 6 REB | 3 STL | 29.2 FPS

This was a better offensive game for Oftana, finishing in double figures for the 11th time in 12 playoff games. Still, his outside shooting remains off, as he has gone 1-for-10 over his last two games. Despite that, he was able to make up for it on the defensive end today, providing solid numbers in both rebounds and steals while also playing strong defense against Abarrientos.

Earl Scottie Thompson GIN SF 4 PTS | 5 REB | 3 BLK | 26.5 FPS

Thompson never got going offensively today, shooting just 2-for-8 from the field and finishing with a playoff-low total. However, he made up for it by contributing in the secondary categories and standing out on defense, where he posted a game-high in blocks. Still, his offensive struggles against TNT have been hard to ignore, as he has turned in subpar performances in three of five games this conference.

Rhon Jay Abarrientos GIN PG 21 PTS | 1 REB | 4 AST | 26.2 FPS

The Best Player of the Conference delivered again in Game 4—at least initially. He was absolutely on fire in the second quarter, knocking down multiple threes to finish with 17 first-half points. However, the second half was a completely different story. He went ice-cold in the fourth quarter, managing just two points without a single made field goal. This was a sharp drop off after totaling 26 fourth-quarter points in the first three games of the series.

Jayson Castro TNT PG 14 PTS | 3 REB | 1 AST | 19.1 FPS

This was his first start in the playoffs and he made a big difference. Offensively, he was effective from all levels and matched his highest scoring performance of the conference. With several TNT’s key players struggling offensively, they will need someone to provide that offensive spark and Castro is perfect for that.

Brandon Arnell Ganuelas-Rosser TNT C 10 PTS  | 8 REB | 1 TO | 18.6 FPS

TNT needed a win today, and BGR stepped up in a huge way. He delivered again offensively, posting seven points in the first quarter. But his impact was felt most on the boards, where he led all players with four offensive rebounds. This level of production will be absolutely crucial for TNT in this series.

Japeth Paul Aguilar GIN C 12 PTS | 5 REB | 1 AST | 18.5 FPS

Though he’s been wildly inconsistent throughout the conference, he appears to be finding his rhythm at the right time, posting back-to-back games with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Still, Ginebra will need Aguilar to be a much bigger threat in the paint if they hope to win this series.

Jeth Troy Rosario GIN PF 11 PTS  | 2 REB | 13.4 FPS

In terms of scoring, Rosario has been steady, averaging 10.5 points in this series. Elsewhere, however, his production has been severely lacking, as he’s averaged just 2.7 rebounds over the last three games. The team will definitely need him to be much better if they want to win Game 5.

Rey Benedict Nambatac TNT PG 7 PTS | 1 AST | 1 STL | 12.7 FPS

Though this was a relatively quiet performance, it was still a big improvement from his previous outing. Even so, TNT will need a much bigger game from Nambatac in Game 5 in order for them to take control of this series.

Louis Raphael Cu GIN SF 2 PTS | 4 REB | 3 AST | 11.3 FPS

It was another disappointing game for the forward. While he stayed productive in other areas, his scoring continues to be a major issue, averaging just 1.3 points on 2-for-15 shooting from the field over their last three games.

Henry Galinato Jr. TNT C 5 PTS | 1-3 FG | 4 REB | 9.8 FPS

Rebounding was a huge factor in TNT’s win in Game 4, and Galinato played a key role in that. They finished with a +16 advantage in total rebounds, a +11 edge in offensive rebounds, and +8 in second-chance points. The team will definitely need him to bring the same impact in Game 5.

Stephen Jeffrey Holt GIN SG 5 PTS | 4 REB | 1 TO | 8.8 FPS

Holt was a game-changer for Ginebra in Game 3, hitting five threes and delivering his first 20-point outing of the conference. Today, however, he was back to his inconsistent self, finishing with single digit points for the eighth time in the playoffs.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE DAY:

Roger Ray Pogoy TNT SF 5 PTS | 2 REB | 1 TO | 6.4 FPS

Nothing seemed to click for Pogoy in Game 4. He started poorly, going scoreless in the first two quarters, got into foul trouble and never recovered, finishing with a playoff-low in points on a rough 2-for-10 shooting from the field.
