The road just gets tougher for Alex Eala as she will next be facing another multi-titled champion in Elina Svitolin in the quarterfinals of the Berlin Tennis Open,
After defeating Donna Vekic in the main draw, Eala pulled an upset victory over world No. 2 Elena Rybakina to advance further in the tournament.
Elina Svitolina: A 21-Time Champion
One thing that stands out about Eala’s next opponent is that she has already won 21 WTA titles throughout her 16-year professional career.
The 31-year-old Ukrainian also captured the ASB Classic title in New Zealand earlier this year—the very same tournament where the 21-year-old Filipina was eliminated in the semifinals.
Despite her illustrious career, Svitolina has yet to win a title on grass and has never reached a grass-court final. Her best performances on the surface came during her semifinal runs at Wimbledon in 2019 and 2023.
This season, the sixth-seeded Svitolina holds a 2-0 record on grass after defeating Anna Kalinskaya and Eva Lys at the Berlin Tennis Open.
If there is one accomplishment Svitolina still hopes to achieve at this stage of her career, it would be winning a grass-court championship. Standing in the way of that goal is Alex Eala.
Eala’s Confidence at an All-Time High
Eala’s confidence is at an all-time high after improving her grass-court record to 8-1 this season, highlighted by her WTA 125 title at the Birmingham Classic. She also reached a grass-court final last year at the Eastbourne Open, giving her valuable experience and an advantage heading into her next matchup.
The quarterfinal clash between Eala and Svitolina will mark the first meeting between the two, and fans are expecting a memorable battle on the court.
