The Yulo takeover of Asian gymnastics is here. And it began in earnest on Saturday in Zunyi, China.
Carlos Yulo and Eldrew Yulo stood on the same podium in the floor exercise final of the 13th Senior Artistic Gymnastics Asian ChampionshipsCarlos at the top with a 14.700, Eldrew at third with a 14.300—delivering a one-two Filipino strike that Philippine gymnastics has never produced before at this level and may not have dared to dream about even a year ago.
Gold and bronze. Two brothers. One event. One podium.
Masterful Caloy, Exceptional Eldrew
Carlos, as expected, was masterful in his pet event. The Olympic double-gold medalist and reigning world champion produced a 14.700—the kind of number that reminds the rest of Asia why he remains the standard by which everyone else is measured. Japan’s Shoma Tsukiyama split the brothers with a silver-medal score of 14.600, but the story of the final was never really about him. It was about what the Philippines brought to that floor—twice.
Eldrew’s 14.300 for bronze was the result of a senior newcomer performing with a composure that belies his experience level. He earned the last spot in the floor exercise final in qualifying. He left it with a medal. The scoreline from qualifying—where he posted a 13.600—told you he belonged. The bronze told you he was ready.
Previously, the question was how Carlos and Eldrew would stack up against each other before turning their attention to the rest of the field. The answer is now on the record: separated by 0.400 points, with Carlos at the summit and Eldrew on the podium. The gap between them is real but not vast—and Eldrew is 22 years old at the start of his senior career while Carlos is already rewriting what Filipino gymnastics looks like at the top.
Carlos and Eldrew Yulo Will Still See Action
The weekend is not over. Carlos has two more event finals to contest. Eldrew has one remaining. Both will be competing with the confidence that only a podium finish produces—and with the knowledge that what they have already done together in Zunyi has changed the conversation about what Philippine gymnastics can be.
Gold and bronze in the floor exercise at the Asian Championships, brothers on the same podium for the first time at this level. This is not a preview of what could happen at Nagoya or Rotterdam or Los Angeles in 2028.
This is what is happening right now.
