Alex Eala will begin her 2026 Wimbledon campaign against her former doubles partner, Renata Zarazúa, in the opening round of the grass-court Grand Slam.

After competing in the Lexus Birmingham Open, HSBC Championships, Berlin Tennis Open, and Bad Homburg Open, the pride of the Philippines now turns her focus to the final grass-court tournament of the year.

Renata Zarazúa: A Familiar Face in Eala’s Career

The 28-year-old Mexican has been a recurring figure in Alex Eala’s journey over the past few years. The most notable instance came at the 2025 Roland Garros, where Eala and Zarazúa teamed up in doubles and reached the second round after defeating Emily Appleton of Great Britain and Yvonne Cavalle-Reimers of Spain in straight sets. The duo later fell to Olga Danilović of Serbia and Anastasia Potapova of Russia, also in straight sets.

In 2024, the two met in singles at the Cary Tennis Classic quarterfinals, with Zarazúa prevailing after three grueling sets. Eala, however, exacted revenge in doubles at the 2024 Canberra International, teaming up with Laura Pigossi to defeat Zarazúa and Sara Errani in the Round of 16.

Renata Zarazúa’s biggest Wimbledon accomplishment came last year, when she reached the second round after defeating Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer before being eliminated by 13th seed Amanda Anisimova. In previous years, the four-time WTA 125 champion either exited in qualifying or was knocked out in the first round.

The Best Version of Alex Eala?

With Wimbledon about to begin, many fans believe the version of Alex Eala competing this year could be her strongest yet. Her record supports the claim. Carrying a 9-4 win-loss mark and one WTA 125 title across four grass-court tournaments, the Rafa Nadal Academy graduate may be the most complete player she has been in her young career.

In her senior Wimbledon debut last year, Eala suffered a first-round exit against defending champion Barbora Krejčíková, after a hard-fought three-set match. In doubles, she and Eva Lys were eliminated in the opening round by the American-Brazilian duo of Quinn Gleason and Ingrid Martins.

With a 1-0 singles head-to-head record in favor of the Mexicab, the upcoming clash between world No. 30 Alex Eala and world No. 76 Renata Zarazúa will be a strong test of whether both athletes are ready to take the next step in their careers.
