In-Depth Talent Identification Ahead of a Hectic Schedule
After a demanding stretch of international competitions, the national team regrouped in San Diego to reset and begin its road to Brazil. As part of the rebuilding process, the Filipinas held a training camp last month featuring a 30-player pool.
Torcaso also traveled to the Philippines this week to scout local players and reconnect with homegrown talents. His visit coincided with the opening of the Philippine Football Federation Women’s League, an important platform for identifying promising athletes within the country.
In addition to monitoring players based in the Philippines, the Australian coach plans to personally observe Filipina footballers competing in leagues across Southeast Asia, including Myanmar and Taiwan.
Torcaso emphasized that expanding the player pool remains a top priority as the team prepares for tougher international competitions. By evaluating players from both local and overseas leagues, the Filipinas aim to build a deeper, more competitive roster ahead of 2027.
Key Competitions Leading to Brazil 2027
The Filipinas’ schedule over the next two years includes several major tournaments and international training windows. One of the immediate highlights is the Asian Games in Japan this September, where Torcaso will once again lead the national team after its historic quarterfinal appearance in 2023.
Although the tournament falls outside the official FIFA calendar and may prevent some overseas-based professionals from joining, Torcaso believes it remains an important test for the squad.
Beyond the Asian Games, the national team will maximize every available FIFA international window leading up to June 2027. Planned activities include a South American tour in October, matches against Asian and Oceania opponents toward the end of 2026, participation in the Pinatar Cup in Spain in February 2027, and the Olympic qualifying tournament in April 2027.
The preparation campaign will conclude with an extended training camp in Brazil lasting four to six weeks before the World Cup begins.
Rising in Asian Football
The Filipinas have steadily established themselves as one of Asia’s rising women’s football teams in recent years.
Their historic gold medal win at the 23rd Southeast Asian Games and participation in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup were considered major steps in the squad’s development.
These future tournaments will allow the coaching staff to further evaluate the team against stronger opposition and identify areas that still need improvement ahead of the next World Cup campaign.
