Alex Eala faces another formidable challenge in the Round of 16 of the National Bank Open as she takes on world No. 14 Belinda Bencic.
The Swiss star heads into the contest with a strong 23-9 record in her 2026 WTA singles campaign. At Wimbledon and the French Open, the 29-year-old reached the Round of 16 before bowing out. She also advanced to the quarterfinals at the Miami Open and Charleston Open.
Her consistent results give her an edge on paper against her 21-year-old opponent. Still, despite her impressive record, Bencic has yet to capture a WTA singles title this year.
She does, however, carry momentum into the match after defeating Sloane Stephens, 6-3, 6-1, and surviving a grueling battle against world No. 105 Taylor Townsend, 6-7(5), 7-6(4), 6-4, in one of the year’s most thrilling encounters.
Eala Going for Another Upset Win
Eala enters the match riding a seven-match winning streak, highlighted by victories over higher-ranked opponents.
Her championship run at the DC Open included wins against world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka, and Leylah Fernandez. At the National Bank Open, she added Alycia Parks and Caty McNally to her list of scalps.
Could this be another giant-slaying moment for Eala? Filipino fans will be eager to find out.
