The Philippine Men’s National Football Team’s 2026 ASEAN Hyundai Cup campaign came to an end on Saturday after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Stadium. With their semifinal hopes already hanging by a thread, the Philippines needed a convincing victory to stay alive. Instead, their campaign ended in the 16th minute when Malaysia’s Gunalan Pavithran broke the deadlock.
After the Philippines failed to properly clear the ball, Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal delivered a precise cross from the right side, allowing Pavithran to rise above the defense and head the ball beyond goalkeeper Patrick Deyto. The goal marked Pavithran’s first international strike and ultimately became the difference between the two sides.
Philippines Threaten But Fail to Find an Equalizer
Despite falling behind early, the Philippines created several opportunities to get back into the contest.
Jarvey Gayoso nearly responded three minutes after the opener when he connected with Kenji Nishioka’s free kick, but his glancing header went narrowly wide.
Javier Mariona then forced Malaysian goalkeeper Azri Ghani into action in the 34th minute after breaking down the right flank before firing a shot that the goalkeeper managed to save.
Malaysia continued to control much of the possession and regularly tested the Filipino defense. Deyto was also called into action in the second half, including a save against Aysar Hadi in the 68th minute.
The Philippines continued searching for an equalizer, with substitute Pocholo Bugas coming close in the 75th minute after beating Alif Ahmad before sending his effort over the crossbar.
Rosquillo Denies Malaysia a Second Goal
Malaysia had opportunities to put the result beyond doubt, but the Philippines remained within striking distance.
Pavithran came particularly close to doubling the hosts’ advantage late in the match. However, Jaime Rosquillo produced a crucial goal-line intervention in the 86th minute to prevent the Malaysian winger from scoring his second of the night.
The Philippines could not produce a late response, though, as Malaysia’s defense held firm until the final whistle.
Philippines Finish Fourth in Group B
The defeat officially ended the Philippines’ hopes of reaching the semifinals, finishing fourth in Group B with three points from one victory and three defeats.
“We started off really badly and we got better when the tournament went on,” said Sandro Reyes of the Philippine team about the match against Malaysia.
“It’s definitely a learning experience that we cannot start these tournaments on the wrong foot because very quickly it can turn things very difficult for you,” he added.
The Filipinos opened the campaign with a 4-1 defeat to Myanmar before responding with a 4-1 victory over Laos. They then suffered a 1-0 losses to Thailand before dropping another 1-0 decision to Malaysia.
Loss Sends Philippines Crashing Out
Before kickoff, the Philippines needed to beat Malaysia by at least six goals while also hoping Thailand defeated Myanmar. Thailand eventually won 2-0, but the Philippines’ defeat ensured there would be no mathematical escape.
“We are a group of guys that gave everything in this tournament and it wasn’t so easy: Players leaving their clubs, players sacrificing time from their family… taking time in the off season, the pre-season to fight for the country so I think everyone gave their best and that’s all we can do at the end of the day,” Reyes explained.
Malaysia, meanwhile, finished second in Group B with nine points and advanced to the semifinals alongside group winners Thailand.
“Thank you very much and we hope to do better in the next ones,” he said.
The Philippines will now turn its attention to its upcoming 2026 competitions, including the Asian Games and the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup.
