Patrick Deyto has officially brought the curtain down on his 12-year international career after the Philippines concluded its ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026 campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Malaysia.
The veteran goalkeeper’s final appearance for the Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) came in Kuala Lumpur, a fitting setting for the end of a journey that also began in Malaysia back in 2014. After more than a decade of representing the country, Deyto now turns his attention toward the remaining chapter of his professional club career.
A Career That Came Full Circle

Deyto made his international debut against Malaysia in March 2014, shortly after completing his collegiate career with De La Salle University. Twelve years later, he returned to Malaysia for what became his final appearance in the national colors.
The Kaya-Iloilo goalkeeper finished his international career with 22 caps, becoming part of several important periods in the Philippines’ rise as a competitive force in Southeast Asian football. He was also a member of Philippine squads that reached the ASEAN Championship semifinals in 2014, 2018, and 2024, experiencing both the growth and challenges of the national team throughout his career.
Strong Finish for Deyto Despite Disappointing Results
Deyto’s final tournament did not produce the results the Philippines wanted, but the veteran still delivered encouraging performances between the posts.
After sitting out the team’s opening two matches, Deyto was handed starting assignments against Thailand and Malaysia in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026. Both matches ended in narrow 1-0 defeats, but his performances kept the Philippines in contention deep into each contest.
His displays were particularly significant considering that he had previously been sidelined by a serious injury in 2024. Returning to the national team and competing against some of the region’s strongest sides allowed Deyto to end his international career on his own terms.
He also wore the captain’s armband during the final 45 minutes against Malaysia, adding another memorable moment to his farewell.
Passing the Gloves to the Next Generation
Deyto’s retirement signals the beginning of a new era for Philippine goalkeeping.
During his international career, he competed alongside established goalkeepers such as Neil Etheridge, Roland Müller, Ed Sacapano, and Michael Falkesgaard.
Now, the position is set to be carried by a younger group that includes Kevin Ray Mendoza, Quincy Kammeraad, Enrico Mangaoang, and Nicholas Guimarães.
Deyto has embraced that transition, recognizing that stepping aside gives the next generation an opportunity to establish themselves on the international stage.
He leaves Philippine football with 22 international appearances, years of experience, and a legacy that can serve as an example for the goalkeepers who follow in his footsteps.
