Whatever It Takes: Rodney Brondial Carves Out Role Focusing on Intangibles in Scoring-Heavy San Miguel

Rodney Brondial is making his minutes count for the San Miguel Beermen. And those minutes are increasing—deservedly.

On Wednesday, in San Miguel’s 144-113 rout of the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, Brondial played a little over 29 minutes, continuing a trend in this PBA Governors’ Cup that has seen the former Adamson Falcon playing more and more. In fact, in this conference, the 6-foot-5 bruiser has all but supplanted Mo Tautuaa as the Beermen’s second big behind the inimitable June Mar Fajardo.

Brondial Puts Up Double-Double

The minutes are well deserved. Against Titan Ultra, Brondial put up 13 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to go along with 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. That’s not a one-off, as Brondial this conference has been averaging 7.2 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists while bringing never-ending energy for the Beermen, as well as a whatever-it-takes mindset focused on doing the little things to win.

“Dun lang naman talaga ko naka-focus [rebounding],” Brondial acknowledged in the postgame presser after San Miguel’s seventh win this conference. “Sa intangibles ako naka-focus. Dito kasi sa team namin marami talagang scorer, so kung anong pwede ko ma-contribute maliban sa points, kung ano ‘yung makakatulong sa team, palagi namang dun ako naka-focus.”

Brondial is spot on. San Miguel’s firepower is almost unmatched, and it was on full display against Titan Ultra. George King led the way with 39 points, Don Trollano added 21, Marcio Lassiter chipped in 15, and Jerrick Ahanmisi put up 12. In total, 13 of the 14 players Leo Austria fielded against the Giant Risers scored, underscoring the Beermen’s scoring depth.

The former Falcon was one of those 13 players as he tallied 13 on top of the 17 caroms he grabbed. He also did a little bit of everything—whatever San Miguel needed. Whatever it took to win.
