Rodney Brondial is sometimes called “Rodman” in PBA circles. On Tuesday, in the San Miguel Beermen’s 123‑109 rout of the Macau Giant Pandas, the former Adamson Falcon showed why he deserves that nickname, which alludes to NBA legend Dennis Rodman.
Rodman‑Like Brondial Puts Up Monster Performance
Brondial put up monster numbers against Macau, finishing with 10 points, a conference‑high 25 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block in just a little over 32 minutes of action.
Afterward, the 6‑foot‑4 cager chalked up his stellar outing as being all in a day’s work.
“Kailangan ko lang lumabas sa mundo ng mga halimaw kasi wala si June Mar [Fajardo],” he joked. “Kailangan mag‑effort tayo.”
Indeed, the nine‑time MVP was sidelined due to an elbow injury, and Brondial took his spot in the starting lineup. He also got extended minutes—and he certainly made the most out of his extra playing time.
Always Staying Ready
Brondial’s monster game should not be that surprising. The veteran has always been a prolific rebounder even as an undersized slot man, and his energy and hustle are staples of his game, whether he gets extended minutes or plays just a few.
For Brondial, it is all about doing work and staying ready for when his number is called.
“Trabaho lang,” he deadpanned. “Kung anuman mabigay sa ’king opportunity, ready lang ako lagi. Gusto ko din padaliin mga trabaho ng mga teammates natin.”
On Tuesday, that is exactly what Brondial did. He took advantage of his opportunity with Fajardo out—and he certainly made his teammates’ lives easier by gobbling up rebounds, defending with energy, and even dishing out assists.
In short, he was Dennis Rodman out there for San Miguel, at least on Tuesday night.
But rest assured, he will be ready for his next go‑round.
