Alex Eala revealed in an appearance at the BPI Wealth Lounge in Makati City that competing in the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, this September 2026 is part of her plans as she aims to represent the Philippines once again.
“Asian Games is in my plans, yes,” said Eala when asked about the possibility of her representing the country in the quadrennial meet.
Always a Different Vibe for Alex Eala
After representing the country and winning the women’s singles gold medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand in December 2025, the 21‑year‑old tennis sensation discussed the differences between competing in various international tournaments.
“Well, it’s always an honor. I think it’s different when I play in the Southeast Asian Games, or in the Asian Games, or in the Olympics. I think it’s different… it brings a different vibe than when I compete in the WTA Tour,” Eala told reporters.
Her women’s singles gold medal at last year’s SEA Games was historic, as it marked the Philippines’ first tennis gold medal in 26 years since Maricris Fernandez accomplished the feat in 1999.
“And I always enjoy, especially when I have teammates, Pinoy teammates. SEA Games last year was an incredible experience for me, and I had so much fun. So I think I’m really excited and super motivated, and I’m gonna give it my best,” Eala added.
The Quezon City native also won two bronze medals at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, capturing one in the women’s singles event and another in mixed doubles.
Alex Eala Can Buid Her Legacy at Asian Games
Throughout the history of the Asian Games, the Philippines has never won a gold medal in women’s tennis.
The closest a Filipina has come to winning one was Desideria Ampon, who settled for the silver medal in the women’s singles event at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo.
Should Alex Eala accomplish that feat, it would further strengthen her case as greatest tennis player in Philippine history.
The 20th Asian Games are scheduled to be held from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
