The San Miguel Beermen hacked out an emphatic 144-113 blowout of the Titan Ultra Giant Risers on Wednesday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. The win improved San Miguel’s PBA Governors’ Cup record to 7-2 heading into the month-long break and dropped Titan Ultra to 2-7.
What Happened?
Titan Ultra held its own against the Beermen with a spirited opening frame led by 9 points from import Tirrell Brown and 10 combined from Pao Javillonar and Von Pessumal. Thanks to that combined effort, the Giant Risers ended the first on top, 27-26. San Miguel, however, took control in the second frame, with a 12-2 run early giving the Beermen their first double-digit lead, 44-34, en route to a 64-50 cushion heading into halftime.
San Miguel continued its mastery over Titan after intermission, firing 35 more points in the third, which also saw Giant Risers guard Bryan Sajonia suffer what looked like an injured left knee at the 8:51 mark. The Beermen, who entered the fourth ahead, 99-78, continued their domination with a 45-35 final frame.
Who Stood Out?
George King continued his strong play for the Beermen, leading all scorers with 39 points to go along with 10 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Don Trollano played superbly as well, coming off the bench to tally 21 points and 10 boards. Rodney Brondial added a 13-point, 17-rebound double-double for good measure.
Brown was a bright spot for Titan Ultra with 34 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Fran Yu and John Amores, meanwhile, tried to provide a spark off the bench as each fired 11 points.
3 Keys to the Game
- Rebounding. The Beermen dominated the battle of the boards, 69-49, and won the offensive glass, 22-9, as well. That led to 22 second-chance points compared with Titan Ultra’s 4.
- Paint play. San Miguel kept pounding it in the paint against the Giant Risers, scoring 70 big points in the interior as King, Trollano, and Brondial repeatedly punctured the defense. In contrast, Titan Ultra scored just 48 in the paint.
- Bench play. While Amores and Yu came off the bench and tallied 22 combined, San Miguel’s reserves proved too much, outscoring their counterparts, 71-49. It was simply too much firepower.
