Alas Pilipinas Women picked up their first win of the 20th Asian Games in dominant fashion, sweeping Qatar, 25‑8, 25‑2, 25‑9, on Sunday at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Gymnasium in Japan.
The Filipinas wasted little time taking control against the young Qatari side, which averaged just 17.58 years old. Alas Pilipinas gave up only 19 points throughout the 52‑minute match to keep their ninth‑place hopes alive.
Amie Provido led the Philippines with 19 points, including 11 kills, 4 blocks, and 4 aces. She was especially dominant in the second set, scoring 11 points as Alas Pilipinas ripped off 19 straight points to turn the frame into a blowout.
Shaina Nitura and Bella Belen added 10 points apiece, while Niña Ytang and Alyssa Solomon contributed 7 and 6, respectively.
Alas Pilipinas Finally Get on Win Column
The Philippines finished with 39 attacks, 11 blocks, and 9 aces, while Qatar managed just 8 attacks and 2 blocks. Nine of Qatar’s 19 points came from Alas Pilipinas errors.
The victory snapped a two‑game skid for the Filipinas after losses to China and Kazakhstan in the pool phase and sent them into the classification round.
The national team will face Mongolia on Monday, September 21, with a spot in the ninth‑place match on the line. The loser will drop to the 11th‑place match.
Meanwhile, Qatar will meet Kyrgyzstan in the 13th‑place match.
