The wait for gold is finally over—and, fittingly, the Philippines’ golden boy, Carlos Yulo, delivered it.
Competing in Aichi‑Nagoya alongside younger brother Eldrew, the elder Yulo captured the country’s first gold medal of the 20th Asian Games with a flawless performance in the Men’s Floor Exercise on Thursday at the Rainbow Hall of the Nagoya General Gymnasium.
Carlos Yulo Golden Again
Yulo scored 14.666 to edge Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi, who settled for silver with 14.600. Both men submitted a difficulty level of 5.7, but the Filipino nudged ahead with an execution score of 8.966 compared to Karimi’s 8.800. Japan’s Shama Tsukiyama rounded out the podium with 14.566 on a difficulty level of 5.6.
Entering the 20th Asian Games, Yulo was tabbed as one of the country’s gold‑medal hopefuls—and he delivered in his pet event. The 26‑year‑old gymnast previously won one of his two Olympic gold medals in the Men’s Floor Exercise and is the five‑time reigning champion of the same event in the Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
This gold marks Yulo’s first in the continental showpiece.
More to Come?
With gold already secured, Yulo has the chance to add more on Friday as he is set to compete in the finals of both the Men’s Vault and Men’s Parallel Bars. The double‑Olympic gold medalist is a strong contender in both events, having won gold in these disciplines in other competitions—notably Men’s Vault gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Regardless of tomorrow’s results, it is already mission accomplished for Carlos Yulo, who now adds Asian Games hardware to his still‑growing résumé. Rest assured, he will try his best to add more.
