Alex Eala and Hailey Baptiste saw their doubles campaign at the Italian Open come to an end after bowing to the powerhouse tandem of Kateřina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend, 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 32 on Tuesday evening.

The opening set began competitively as Eala and Baptiste battled through a tightly contested first game. However, Townsend and Siniaková quickly found their rhythm and established control from the baseline.

The experienced tandem surged to a commanding 4-0 lead, consistently pressuring the Filipino-American pair with deep returns and sharp angles. Eala and Baptiste finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth game after consecutive points from the Filipina star helped them hold serve.

Still, the momentum remained firmly with the second seeds.

Townsend and Siniaková continued dictating the pace with efficient serving and crisp exchanges at the net. After splitting the next two games, the Grand Slam champions closed out the first set, with Siniaková firing an ace to cap the opener.

Statistically, the gap was evident early. Townsend and Siniaková converted key break opportunities while limiting unforced errors, preventing Eala and Baptiste from establishing any rhythm in extended rallies.

Eala, Baptiste Show Resistance in Second Set

The second frame followed a similar pattern as the veteran duo once again raced out to a quick 4-0 advantage.

Townsend and Siniaková continued attacking aggressively on return while capitalizing on errors from Eala and Baptiste. The Filipino-American pair struggled to generate consistent pressure despite showing flashes of solid shot-making.

Alex Eala and Hailey Baptiste avoided a shutout in the second set thanks to a clutch response from Baptiste. During a tense fifth game, Baptiste delivered a timely ace after Siniaková briefly took a hard fall while attempting to chase down a ball at deuce.

That hold trimmed the deficit to 4-1 and briefly energized the underdogs, but the experienced pair quickly restored order.

Siniaková and Townsend remained composed in the closing stretch, using their superior court coverage and net dominance to control the final exchanges. Consecutive errors from Eala in the seventh game handed the favorites match point before Siniaková finished the contest with a decisive backhand smash, ending the match in one hour and nine minutes.

Italian Open Campaign Ends for Alex Eala

The defeat officially wrapped up Alex Eala’s 2026 Italian Open campaign following an encouraging singles run earlier in the tournament.

The Filipina reached the third round in singles play, where she pushed world No. 2 Elena Rybakina before falling in straight sets. Along the way, Eala earned notable victories over Magdalena Fręch and Wang Xinyu.

For Townsend and Siniaková, the victory sends them into the Round of 16, where they will face the Romanian pair of Sorana Cîrstea and Jaqueline Cristian.

Meanwhile, Alex Eala now shifts her focus to the WTA 500 Strasbourg Open, which is set to take place from May 17 to 23. However, the Rafa Nadal Academy alumna will have to go through the Qualifying Round this time to make the Main Draw. n
