Alex Eala’s return to the WTA Tour ended in disappointment after Chinese qualifier Han Shi rallied past the Filipina, 4–6, 6–3, 6–3, in the opening round of the 2026 Wuhan Open on Monday evening.

The world No. 19 struggled to maintain her early momentum against the world No. 217, suffering another unexpected defeat after her recent campaigns at the Singapore Open and the 20th Asian Games.

Alex Eala Survives Tight Opening Set

Eala encountered resistance early as both players exchanged games in a closely contested opening set. Despite committing several unforced errors, the 13th-seeded Filipina managed to keep the match within reach.

With the score tied at 4–4, Eala survived a lengthy ninth game before taking a 5–4 advantage. She then recovered from a 0–40 deficit in the following game, stringing together six consecutive points to secure the opening set, 6–4.

However, her inability to consistently find her rhythm left the door open for the Chinese qualifier to mount a comeback.

Han Shi Rallies to Force Deciding Set

Eala initially maintained her advantage in the second set, moving ahead, 3–2, after trading games with Shi.

The Chinese qualifier gradually gained confidence through her aggressive groundstrokes and sharper shot-making. She won four consecutive games to overturn the deficit and claim the second set, 6–3, leveling the match at one set apiece.

Shi carried that momentum into the deciding frame, immediately putting Eala under pressure with another dominant stretch.

Han Shi Completes Wuhan Open Upset

Shi raced to a 3–0 lead in the final set before Eala finally halted her run to get on the scoreboard.

The Filipina attempted to narrow the gap, but Shi continued to dictate the exchanges and maintained control of her service games. Eala managed to win three games in the decider but could not complete another comeback.

Shi eventually closed out the set, 6–3, sealing the victory in approximately two hours and 27 minutes.

Eala finished the match with 37 unforced errors against 20 winners, while Shi recorded 31 winners and four aces, according to one of the supplied reports.

The victory marked Shi’s first career win against a top-20 opponent and her first main-draw triumph at a WTA 1000 tournament.

Alex Eala Turns Attention to Wuhan Open Doubles

The singles defeat marked Eala’s second consecutive early exit in a WTA tournament following her Round of 16 loss to Russia’s Tatiana Prozorova at the Singapore Open. She also recently settled for bronze in women’s singles at the Asian Games after losing to China’s Wang Xiyu in the semifinals.

Despite her singles elimination, Eala remains scheduled to compete in the Wuhan Open women’s doubles alongside Turkish partner Zeynep Sonmez. They are set to face Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska and Anhelina Kalinina later at 3:30 p.m.
