Alex Eala will begin her Asian hardcourt swing at the upcoming WTA 500 Singapore Open, which is set to run from September 21 to 27.
The Filipina superstar is seeded No. 3 in the tournament and has also been granted a first‑round bye.
Notable Stars Pull Out of the Singapore Open
Originally projected to be ranked No. 6 in the tournament, Alex Eala is now the No. 3 seed after several tennis stars pulled out of the event due to physical fatigue and workload management.
Jessica Pegula, Diana Shnaider, and Sorana Cirstea all unexpectedly skipped the event. Pegula, the World No. 3, was slated to be the tournament’s top seed before withdrawing on Wednesday following a “long and physically demanding few weeks at the US Open.”
Both Shnaider and Cirstea apparently had similar reasons for withdrawing, citing physical fatigue and workload management.
With this, the Singapore Open replaced Pegula with Russian World No. 5 Mirra Andreeva as the No. 1 seed, while American Amanda Anisimova climbed to No. 2.
Defending champion Elise Mertens is seeded No. 4.
The pride of Quezon City, Philippines, is now waiting for her second‑round opponent, which could either be World No. 165 Tatiana Prozorova or World No. 150 Sofia Costoulas.
After her Singapore Open stint, Eala will then compete at the 20th Asian Games at Aichi‑Nagoya, Japan.
