Alex Eala is set to face Oleksandra Oliynykova in the main draw of the WTA 500 Strasbourg Open.
Initially, Eala was scheduled to compete in the tournament’s qualifying rounds, but the withdrawals of Hailey Baptiste and Victoria Mboko opened the door for her to secure a spot in the main draw.
Oleksandra Oliynykova: A Three‑Time Clay‑Court Champion
Standing in Eala’s path is Oleksandra Oliynykova, a three‑time clay‑court champion whose titles all came last year.
The 25‑year‑old Ukrainian captured three WTA 125 championships—the Tolentino Open, Tucumán Open, and Copa LP Chile. Impressively, Oliynykova won the latter two in November.
Currently ranked world No. 66, Oliynykova holds a 7–5 win‑loss record on clay this season. Among those seven victories are the two qualifying matches she had to survive just to reach the main draw. She defeated Ksenia Efremova, 6–1, 6–2, before following it up with a 6–4, 6–4 victory over Yulia Putintseva.
A Match Possibly Favoring Alex Eala
For Eala, however, this upcoming matchup could work in her favor.
Since opening her clay‑court campaign this year at the Linz Open in April, the pride of the Philippines has lost only once in her opening singles matches across four tournaments.
That lone defeat came against Leylah Fernandez at the Stuttgart Open. Since then, the world No. 38 has won each of her subsequent opening‑round singles matches.
The Rafa Nadal Academy alumna currently holds an even 4–4 record in clay‑court singles matches this season. This will be the first time Eala and Oliynykova face each other, and Eala hopes to collect as many victories as possible before competing at Roland Garros.
