Alex Eala Wins HSBC Championships Opener, Shows No Signs of Slowing Down

Alex Eala showed no signs of slowing down as she opened her campaign in the HSBC Championships with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over China’s Shuai Zhang at Queen’s Club in London on Tuesday.

Slow Start Gives Way to Commanding Control

The Filipina star had to overcome an early challenge from the experienced Chinese veteran, who raced to a 2-0 lead after breaking Eala’s serve in the opening game.

Zhang, a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist and multiple Grand Slam doubles champion, looked poised to test Eala’s endurance after the Filipina’s grueling championship run in Birmingham.

Instead, the 2026 WTA 125 Lexus Birmingham champion quickly found her rhythm.

Using her trademark left-handed groundstrokes and improved movement on grass, the newly ranked world No. 33 settled into the contest and immediately erased the deficit. She broke back to level the set at 2-2 before taking control of the rallies with aggressive shot-making from the baseline.

After Zhang managed to stay level at 3-3, Eala elevated her game even further. The Filipina captured the final three games of the opening set, highlighted by a brilliant cross-court backhand passing shot that secured another service break and helped her close out the frame.

Eala Maintains Momentum in Second Set

The momentum carried over into the second set as Eala continued to dictate play.

Although the opening games featured a series of service breaks, Eala gradually tightened her grip on the match. Her relentless court coverage and ability to turn defense into offense frustrated Zhang, who struggled to consistently find answers against the Filipina’s pace and angles.

Eala broke away from a 1-1 deadlock and steadily built a comfortable advantage. Whether exchanging baseline rallies or chasing down difficult shots, the Birmingham Open champion consistently won the crucial points.

Zhang briefly halted the momentum with a service hold, but Eala remained unfazed. The Filipina responded by winning the next several games, stretching her lead and moving within touching distance of victory.

Serving for the match, Eala stayed composed and completed the straight-sets triumph after Zhang misfired on a final return, wrapping up the contest in just over an hour.

Despite Zhang producing more outright winners during portions of the match, Eala’s consistency proved decisive. The Filipina repeatedly capitalized on her opponent’s mistakes while remaining solid behind her own serve, especially during key moments when Zhang threatened to break back.

Winning Streak on Grass Now at 6

The victory marked Eala’s sixth consecutive win on grass and extended her unbeaten start to the surface this season.

Just days after lifting the Birmingham Open trophy, Eala once again demonstrated the confidence and maturity that have fueled her recent rise in the rankings, moving four spots up from her previous rank.

This recent triumph also includes a perfect 5-0 record in the Lexus Birmingham Open, which came against Priscilla Hon, Alina Charaeva, Mananchaya Sawangkaew, Rebeka Masarova, and Nikola Bartunkova..

With the victory, the 21-year-old advances to the Round of 16, where a familiar challenge awaits as she faces off against her close friend, Iva Jovic.
