Alex Eala and Turkish partner Zeynep Sonmez failed to extend their stay at the 2026 WTA 1000 Wuhan Open after suffering a straight‑sets defeat to Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska, 6‑2, 6‑3, in the women’s doubles Round of 32 on Tuesday evening.
The Ukrainian pair immediately put Eala and Sonmez under pressure, breaking their opening service game and building a commanding 4‑0 advantage.
Eala and Sonmez eventually found an opening on their opponents’ serve, converting a break‑point opportunity to get on the scoreboard. However, Kalinina and Yastremska responded by breaking back and continued to dictate the exchanges.
The Filipino‑Turkish duo managed to claim two games before the Ukrainians capitalized on an error from Eala to close out the opening set, 6‑2, after 26 minutes.
Eala and Sonmez Fight Back in Second Set
Eala and Sonmez showed signs of recovery at the start of the second set, breaking their opponents’ serve to take the opening game.
However, Kalinina and Yastremska quickly regained control, breaking back before holding serve to establish a 2‑1 lead. The Ukrainian tandem then won consecutive games to stretch its advantage and move closer to completing the straight‑sets victory.
Despite falling behind, Eala and Sonmez refused to surrender without a fight. They broke their opponents’ serve again and claimed another game to cut the deficit to 5‑3, briefly extending the match.
Ukrainian Duo Seals Wuhan Open Victory
The late rally proved insufficient as Kalinina and Yastremska maintained their composure in the closing stages. After Eala and Sonmez saved one of two match points, the Ukrainian pair converted its opportunity to seal the 6‑3 second‑set victory.
The Filipina and her Turkish partner finished with 19 unforced errors, compared with 15 from their opponents, as the Ukrainians’ greater consistency proved decisive.
Kalinina and Yastremska advanced to face second seeds Anna Danilina and Zhang Shuai, who received a first‑round bye.
Alex Eala Shifts Focus to Ningbo Open
The doubles defeat marked Alex Eala’s second consecutive early exit in Wuhan following her singles loss to Chinese qualifier Han Shi, ranked No. 217 in the world, on Monday. The world No. 19 lost, 4‑6, 6‑3, 6‑3, despite winning the opening set.
The 21‑year‑old will look to regain her form at the WTA 500 Ningbo Open in China, scheduled for October 19 to 25, as she continues her Asian swing.
