The FEU Tamaraws extended their winning streak to four games after routing the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 93-70, in the UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Ateneo started strong, taking a four-point lead, 27-23, at the end of the first quarter. However, FEU took control in the succeeding periods, outscoring the Blue Eagles in each of the final three quarters to secure the victory.
FEU Leaves Ateneo Behind
Luke Felipe delivered the Tamaraws’ biggest lead at 26 points, 86-60, after splitting his free throw with 4:45 remaining in the game.
“Before the game today, the message was ‘Are we who we think we are?’ With that, is Mo [Konateh] who he thinks he is? I think he’s the best FSA here, and he just continues to get better from three years ago to what he’s doing now,” said Tamaraws head coach Sean Chambers.
Tamaraws Deliver Masterclass
Mo Konateh led FEU with 29 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. Kirby Mongcopa delivered an all-around performance with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, and two steals, while Jorick Bautista added 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
For Ateneo, Jared Bahay paced the team with 17 points and 7 assists, while Kieffer Alas finished with 16 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals. Shawn Tuano chipped in 13 points.
FEU will next face the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers on Wednesday, October 14, at 3:00 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Ateneo, meanwhile, will take on UST on Saturday, October 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
