From Frontrunners to Swept: The Cleveland Cavaliers’ Offseason of Reckoning

It’s been 27 years since the New York Knicks made their last NBA Finals appearance, and they’re now only four games away from their first title since 1973. On the losing side of that historic four-game sweep stand the Cleveland Cavaliers, left to wonder where it all went wrong.

For the better part of the 2025-26 regular season, Cleveland was viewed as an Eastern Conference powerhouse. The core trio of DONOVAN MITCHELL, EVAN MOBLEY, and JARRETT ALLEN was dominant, and a trade deadline blockbuster dealing DARIUS GARLAND to the Los Angeles Clippers for JAMES HARDEN sparked a late-season heater to secure the 4th seed. Backed by solid bench depth from MAX STRUS, JAYLON TYSON, SAM MERRILL, and DENNIS SCHRODER, the Cavs looked ready for a deep run.

Instead, an embarrassing collapse in Game 1 completely swung the momentum, culminating in a brutal sweep. Now, Cleveland faces a financial and structural crisis.

The Second-Apron Straightjacket

The Cavaliers entered the postseason as the only team in the NBA operating above the restrictive second apron. This puts management in a severe financial bind regarding roster construction:

  • They cannot combine multiple player salaries in future trades.
  • Their $17 million in trade exceptions are completely frozen.
  • They are barred from using the Mid-Level Exception (MLE), valued at roughly $3-6 million.

While role players like THOMAS BRYANT, LARRY NANCE JR., DEAN WADE, and KEON ELLIS are heading to free agency and likely to walk, the biggest domino is JAMES HARDEN. Harden holds a $43 million player option that he is expected to decline in favor of a cheaper, longer-term contract. While that re-signing would aid Cleveland’s books, it won’t fix their glaring on-court deficiency: defense.

The Giannis Blockbuster Option?

The Knicks exposed Cleveland’s defensive frailties out on the perimeter and in space. With upgrading the defense named as the front office’s top priority, EVAN MOBLEY could become the ultimate sacrificial lamb.

Rumors are already circulating that the Cavs could package Mobley along with multiple draft picks to pursue GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO in a blockbuster swap. Acquiring the Greek Freak would not only give Cleveland an elite defensive anchor but could potentially alter their salary structure to construct a more balanced core around DONOVAN MITCHELL.

It is going to be a long, tough offseason in Cleveland—but undeniably the most crucial one in modern franchise history.
