The JRU Heavy Bombers quickly returned to the win column as they cruised past the LPU Pirates, 94‑69, in Group A of the NCAA Season 102 Men’s Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.
Lawrence Mangubat immediately set the tone for JRU, scoring 12 of the Heavy Bombers’ first 19 points as they established control of the contest. Lyceum, however, managed to stay within striking distance in the opening quarter behind Roger Ondoa, who scored 11 points in the period. The Pirates trailed by only three points, 25‑22, after the first quarter.
Heavy Bombers Blow Game Open in Second Quarter
JRU completely changed the complexion of the game in the second period.
The Heavy Bombers unleashed a 16‑2 run midway through the quarter, with Mangubat and Jhamir Eligado leading the offensive assault as their advantage rapidly expanded. Eligado was particularly dominant, scoring seven points during the quarter while continuing to control the boards.
By halftime, JRU had built a commanding 53‑35 lead, putting Lyceum in a difficult position heading into the second half. The Bombers continued dictating the tempo after the break, exchanging baskets with the Pirates while maintaining their sizeable cushion. JRU entered the fourth quarter ahead, 71‑51, and eventually stretched its advantage to as many as 34 points.
JRU Completes Bounce‑Back Victory
Despite Lyceum increasing its defensive pressure in the final period, JRU never allowed the Pirates to mount a serious comeback.
The Heavy Bombers’ dominance was evident on the glass, where they outrebounded Lyceum, 47‑27, while also converting their transition opportunities and second‑chance possessions.
Mangubat finished with 23 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Eligado delivered a perfect 10‑of‑10 shooting performance for 22 points and 16 rebounds. Chris Hubilla added nine points and six rebounds, while Jalen Garcia and Sanlea Peñaverde chipped in eight points apiece.
Ondoa paced Lyceum with 21 points, four rebounds, and three steals, while Simon Peñafiel contributed 12 points.
Nani Epondulan Highlights Loss to San Beda
After the game, JRU head coach Nani Epondulan emphasized the mental aspect of bouncing back from their narrow loss to the defending champions, San Beda Red Lions.
“No’ng practice namin kahapon, I told the players that this game will be more on mental,” Epondulan said.
Back on September 26, the San Beda Red Lions got the clutch victory against JRU, 65‑62.
“This was a test of character, kung pa’no kami magbounce back sa tough loss.”
The Heavy Bombers improved to 3‑1, keeping pace with the teams at the top of Group A, while the Pirates slipped to 1‑3.
