The Philippine Men’s National Football Team (PMNFT) surrendered a two‑goal advantage as Pakistan mounted a second‑half comeback to force a 2‑2 draw in their FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 match on Tuesday evening.
After losing to Vietnam in their campaign opener, the Philippines immediately dictated the tempo, putting Pakistan under pressure through Bjorn Kristensen and Andre Leipold. Kristensen forced an early save in the fifth minute following a Leipold through ball, while the latter tested Pakistan goalkeeper Yousuf Butt twice in the 12th and 14th minutes.
The pressure finally paid off in the 24th minute. After a Kristensen attempt was cleared onto the crossbar, Sandro Reyes reacted quickest to the rebound and bundled the ball into the net to give the Philippines the lead. Pakistan nearly responded four minutes later when Ali Akbar Khan broke through, but Kevin Ray Mendoza made the necessary save. The Philippines then received a penalty in the 30th minute after Mohammad Fazal was called for handball. Kristensen stepped up and converted from the spot two minutes later, sending Butt the wrong way and doubling the Philippine advantage.
Pakistan Responds After Weather Delay
The Philippines entered halftime with a 2‑0 cushion, but heavy rain and lightning extended the interval and interrupted the team’s momentum.
Pakistan returned from the lengthy break with renewed energy. Just two minutes into the second half, captain Abdullah Iqbal delivered a long ball toward Ali Akbar Khan, who worked past his marker before finishing through Mendoza’s legs to cut the deficit.
Pakistan continued attacking, and their persistence eventually produced the equalizer in the 62nd minute. Abdul Shahzad won possession in midfield, broke through the PMNFT defense, and fired past Mendoza to make it 2‑2.
PMNFT Fails to Find a Winner
Coach Carles Cuadrat responded with multiple substitutions as the PMNFT attempted to regain control, but Pakistan remained dangerous on the counter. Randy Schneider fired wide in the 67th minute, while Mohib Ullah made an important block to deny Paul Tabinas inside the box in the 81st.
The Philippines continued pushing in the closing minutes. Jarvey Gayoso saw two set‑piece attempts blocked, while Cole Mrowka’s effort in the 90th minute was also stopped as Pakistan held on for a historic point.
The draw gave Pakistan its first‑ever point and first two goals in a FIFA tournament. For the Philippines, the result leaves the team in third place in Group B on goal difference and puts its medal‑round hopes under pressure.
The PMNFT will close its group‑stage campaign against Thailand on October 2 at 5 p.m. Philippine time, again at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium.
