The PBA Commissioner’s Cup in Season 50 has officially come to a close, with the Barangay Ginebra on top of the world once again after outlasting the TNT Tropang 5G in a seven-game thriller. This marks their first Commissioner’s Cup title since Season 47 (2022-23), where they famously defeated the top-seeded guest team, the Bay Area Dragons.

The biggest common denominator in their title-clinching wins then and now remains exactly the same: every Filipino’s favorite import, Justin Brownlee.

The 38-Year-Old Iron Man

Having competed in seven seasons’ worth of PBA action since first arriving in 2016, Justin Brownlee once again served as the most vital cog in the Barangay Ginebra machine. Averaging a whopping 41.3 minutes over 26 games, the 38-year-old veteran posted staggering averages of 31.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 block to help Ginebra secure the tournament’s second seed.

After dismantling the Phoenix Super LPG Masters in the quarterfinals, Brownlee went toe-to-toe with the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ explosive import Jaylen Johnson in a true clash of the titans, which Ginebra ultimately captured in six games.

A Finals Clash of Titans

In the Finals, Ginebra was pushed to their absolute limits. TNT Tropang 5G was forced to make a high-stakes roster move after their season-long powerhouse Bol Bol suffered a devastating partial Achilles tear during the semifinals. Former San Miguel Beermen standout Chris McCullough stepped in on short notice as the injury replacement.

Both foreign stars showed exactly why they are among the most highly regarded imports in the PBA over the last decade. Justin Brownlee and Chris McCullough carried their respective squads to three wins apiece, forcing a winner-take-all Game 7.

When everything was on the line, Brownlee delivered the definitive final chapter. He exploded for 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists, adding a steal and a block to anchor Ginebra’s gritty 88-76 championship victory.

Local Heroes and the Finals MVP

Unfortunately, because PBA regulations dictate that Finals MVP honors can only be awarded to local players, Brownlee was ineligible for the individual trophy. The honor ultimately went to Scottie Thompson, though a large contingent of fans and analysts believed rookie sensation RJ Abarrientos had the award firmly in his grasp after a spectacular series.

Individual trophies aside, Justin Brownlee deserves immense respect worldwide for performing at such an elite, grueling level at age 38, officially cementing his legacy as a seven-time PBA Champion.
