In his 24th year in the NBA, the expectations for LeBron James still hasn’t changed. When you have the King on your squad, all eyes point toward the Larry O’Brien trophy.
Entering his first Media Day with an Eastern Conference team since 2017, James commented on the surrounding pressure of ending a team’s 43‑year‑long title drought, but zeroed in on having the possibility to do so.
“Having that type of pressure, I’ve always thrived in it. It’s going to be a difficult challenge as well, coming to a franchise that hasn’t raised the Larry O’Brien trophy since 1983,” James said. “I’m not gonna sit here and say that it’s gonna happen, nothing is promised… But we have a chance,” he added.
The 41‑year‑old forward saw a huge dip in performance in his final year with the Los Angeles Lakers, where he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists playing Robin to Luka Doncic’s Batman, as the Lakers finished with a 53‑29 record—the best in the LeBron era.
LeBron Accepts Challenge With ‘Fully Loaded’ East
In one of the biggest offseasons in NBA history just about done, James commented on the revamped Eastern Conference and how it has loaded up on the brightest stars in basketball to become as competitive as it has ever been, with Giannis Antetokounmpo relocating to the Miami Heat, the New York Knicks looking to defend their crown, and the Toronto Raptors welcoming the return of Kawhi Leonard.
“It’s gonna be fully loaded, it’s gonna be no nights off in the Eastern Conference… It’s bully ball here in the East, and we gotta be ready for that,” James said.
The four‑time champion admitted to having no expectations on how the City of Brotherly Love will welcome him, but remained grateful for all the support that he and his family have received in his short stay so far.
“I had zero expectations… Super humbled by the reception that I’ve gotten from this city. I want to try to pour my game, pour my knowledge, and pour my heart to them as well when I touch the floor every single night,” James said. “Super excited and super humbled that I’ve received that welcoming,” he added.
Gratitude for Lakers Tenure
As his final chapter of basketball begins, LeBron James expressed gratitude for his eight‑year tenure with the Lakers, underlining his initial goal of bringing the purple‑and‑gold back to relevancy and placing them in a position to compete for titles.
“Unbelievable eight years for myself… My one goal was to put the Lakers back in a position where I feel like they deserved relevancy again and to get that Larry O’Brien trophy,” James said.
