Back in January, the Philippines hosted its first‑ever WTA event—the Philippine Women’s Open. It was a WTA 125 event headlined by the country’s very own Alex Eala, with youngsters like Tenny Madis and Stefi Aludo also participating.
The Philippine Women’s Open was by and large a success, so much so that the WTA decided to come back in 2027 with two tournaments—a WTA 125 tourney and a WTA 250 competition. No less than the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) confirmed the positive development, announcing it on social media on Thursday.
“Big things are ahead for Philippine tennis in 2027!” PHILTA wrote. “The Philippines will welcome world‑class women’s tennis with a WTA 125 tournament in January 2027, followed by a WTA 250 tournament in November 2027. Dalawang WTA tournaments sa isang taon, dito mismo sa Pilipinas! Mas maraming world‑class tennis, more opportunities for our players, and more exciting matches for Filipino tennis fans to look forward to… Exciting times ahead for Philippine tennis!”

Why WTA 250 Matters for the Philippines
Nabbing a WTA 250 tournament is significant for the Philippines for so many reasons. For one, it is a show of trust from the WTA to bring a higher‑level tourney to the country following the success of the Philippine Women’s Open. This scheduled competition, which is one level above January’s tournament, is also an official main‑tour event, which means it will attract higher‑seeded players, more international media coverage, and greater recognition for the Philippines as a tennis destination.
This upcoming WTA 250 tournament should also be a boost to local standouts like Madis and Aludo, as they get home‑court advantage and potential wild‑card spots to compete against higher‑level opponents. This will give them valuable exposure and learning opportunities, as well as the chance to earn ranking points as they try to build on their young careers.
Finally, hosting a WTA 250 event successfully could open pathways to nabbing even higher‑level tourneys, like a WTA 500 tournament or even a WTA 1000 one. The latter is the ultimate goal, as it will bring the very best of women’s tennis to the Philippines and the highest amount of prestige with it.
Further details about the January and November 2027 tournaments will be announced at later dates, according to PHILTA.
