The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters continued their winning ways in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Wednesday after pulling out a 124-117 victory over the Terrafirma Dyip at the Ynares Center in Antipolo. It is Rain or Shine’s seventh straight win, while Terrafirma suffered its fourth straight defeat after a 3-0 start to the conference.

What Happened?

Terrafirma showed early it was no pushover, racing out to a 17-10 lead at the midway point of the opening frame. Rain or Shine, though, outscored the Dyip 16-7 the rest of the way to finish the first just down, 27-26. The Elasto Painters then turned things up in the second canto, as they have done multiple times this conference, to take a 67-45 halftime lead. This time around, it was guard Anton Asistio who led the charge with 15 second-quarter points on perfect shooting.

The two teams played it even in the third, resulting in Rain or Shine taking a 96-75 lead into the fourth, which looked like a mere formality. Terrafirma, though, slowly but surely cut into that lead—first trimming it to 13 with seven minutes remaining, then to 11 at the halfway mark of the final frame, and finally to 7 with 2:58 left. But each time the Dyip got close, the Elasto Painters did just enough to squash the rally.

Who Stood Out?

Anton Asistio stood out for his blazing second quarter, where he went off for 15 points highlighted by a four-pointer and three triples. Jun Roque, like Asistio, also came off the bench and impressed with his 15 points. Finally, Jaylen Johnson had a triple-double in limited minutes, tallying 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Over at Terrafirma, Mubashar Ali fired 32 points and grabbed 19 boards to break out of a slump. Jerrick Ahanmisi, meanwhile, came alive in the fourth and finished with 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists despite struggling from the field in the first three quarters.

3 Keys to the Game

  1. Three-point shooting. Rain or Shine rained threes on Terrafirma on Wednesday, tying the most threes made in a game with 23 (including one four-pointer). The Elasto Painters were particularly prolific in the second and third quarters, where they built their sizable lead. In contrast, Terrafirma hit just six triples out of 27 attempts.
  2. Turnovers. The Elasto Painters also dominated in this department, turning the ball over only 10 times while forcing the Dyip into 22 giveaways. This resulted in a 29-10 advantage for Rain or Shine in points off turnovers.
  3. Bench play. Rain or Shine’s reserves did a number on their Terrafirma counterparts, outscoring them by a mile, 83-33. In fact, Asistio and Roque alone tied Terrafirma’s bench production, illustrating the chasm in bench play.
