The San Miguel Beermen endured some tense moments but eventually found their groove to dismantle the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, 143-105, on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The win improves San Miguel’s PBA Governors’ Cup record to 4-1, while the loss drops Titan Ultra to 1-5.
What Happened?
San Miguel started off red-hot, with Jerrick Ahanmisi firing 12 points and Marcio Lassiter adding 10 to power the Beermen to a 38-31 opening frame. They cooled off a bit in the second, with the Giant Risers this time outscoring San Miguel, 27-23, to enter the half just down by three, 61-58.
The Giant Risers continued to claw back into the game, tying it at 66 and then at 68 at the 9:20 mark of the third. But San Miguel would go on to outscore Titan Ultra, 42-13, in the next nine minutes to enter the fourth with a massive 110-81 cushion. The Beermen finished the job by outscoring the outmatched Giant Risers, 33-24, in the final frame.
Who Stood Out?
George King again led the way for San Miguel with a game-high 35 points on top of 8 rebounds, 8 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. He got plenty of help from Ahanmisi, who played his best game for the Beermen with 26 points on 10-for-15 shooting overall. Don Trollano added 22 off the bench on a 9-for-13 clip.
Titan Ultra, on the other hand, drew a solid game from Joshua Munzon, who finished with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals on a surprisingly efficient 10-for-17 clip. Bryan Sajonia, meanwhile, provided a spark with 19 points and 3 steals off the bench.
3 Keys to the Game
- San Miguel’s scorching-hot shooting. The Beermen were simply on fire on Wednesday night as they shot 62.8% overall (54-for-86), 67.9% from two-point range (38-for-56), 52.0% from deep (13-for-25), and 60.0% (3-for-5) from four-point land. Put simply, no team is beating San Miguel when it shoots like that.
- Ball movement. A big reason San Miguel shot so well was their ball movement. With that unselfishness, the ball kept finding the open man, which usually was Ahanmisi, Lassiter, or Trollano.
- Talent. At the end of the day, the gap in talent was just too much for Titan Ultra to overcome. The Giant Risers stayed in the game for the first 27 minutes, even tying it twice in the early part of the third. But then San Miguel’s talent simply took over.
